This is designed for use with first time climbers and offers an introduction to basic tower climbing and rescue. It is delivered over 3 consecutive days where both knowledge and practical elements are assessed and consists of the following:


  1. Understanding legislation and safety standards
  2. Assessing risk
  3. Managing common hazards
  4. Using harnesses
  5. Using fall arrest lanyards
  6. Selecting appropriate anchor points
  7. Using fixed fall arrest systems
  8. Using work positioning lanyards
  9. Using additional fall prevention equipment
  10. Developing rescue plans
  11. Inspecting rescue equipment
  12. Managing suspension syncope
  13. Selecting rescue techniques
  14. Using knots and “off-weighting” techniques
  15. Demonstrating climbing techniques
  16. Carrying out a rescue

MATS Basic Tower Climbing & Rescue – Revalidation

Renewal training is a 1-day mandatory programme to update on legislation, HSE, and equipment, placing a focus on practical climbing & rescue activity. Renewal training should take place every 12 months.
